Strictly speaking of course the term “lovers rock” refers to that particular saccharine strand of reggae music popular in the second half of the seventies that emerged out of the UK reggae scene appealing to young girls and created by artists such as Louisa Marks, Brown Sugar, 15 16 & 17, Janet Kay etc. Of course, the style had its roots in American soul music and Jamaican love songs and ballads, especially the rock steady style. Soul Jazz have collated eighteen tracks drawn from the legendary Studio One catalogue and includes such gems as Alton Ellis’ Tumbling Tears, Carlton & His Shoes’ Never Give Your Love Away, Marcia Griffiths’ Truly and Jerry Jones’ Oh Me Oh My, as well as rarities such as The Invaders’ stunning Soulful Music. A great selection of tunes regardless of genre.
